Ventrilo - Scalable Voice Communication Software is another interesting VOIP I’d like to check out when I have some more time.

Just be warned. Ventrilo works very well and is very easy to use; however, it have some kind of “big brother” reporting mechanism every time to start the client or server. An 86-byte UDP packet goes out to server1.ventrilo.com on port 5000. The company so far has refused to explain the purpose for this network traffic.
Just a guess, but from reading their documentation, I think this is a mechanism for them to be able to offer a redirect to folks running servers on dynamic IP addresses.
I do not believe that’s related to port forwarding for ventrilo servers. It’s probably for market-share tracking, and harmless. They don’t need to explain what it is — 86 bytes… probably pretty useless except for basic usage stats.
