Support Video for Plone 3
Feb 3rd, 2008 by Jon Stahl
Nate Aune is trying to raise a few bucks to support a Plone 3-compatible release of Plone4ArtistsVideo. P4A.Video is the glue behind the scenes of his impressive new Plone.tv website and far and away the most impressive video add-on product for Plone.
Nate’s over $1200 of the way towards his $2000 goal — pretty respectable. I’ve already donated, and if you care about the future of multimedia support in Plone, then you should donate a few bucks, too.
Well, that was fast. $2000 goal reached. Bravo, Plone community!
Jon,
We are working on a similar project, not yet for plone 3 however. It would contain a lot more social elements however. Our plans are to finish all that stuff in the next 6 months. I sent an email to the plone4artists guys, because we feel there’s a better video player around than the one they’re using.. and because we would develop a lot of stuff they could use as well.
Perhaps it’s an idea to pull some more people together and really move things forward.
We are very very hesistant to doing a many-cooks-in-the-kitchen project, what we are interested in are results. However our funds are limited as well, so either perhaps a larger project, or fundraising or something may be a good idea.. ?
BTW I read yr background: mine is physics, but I did marketing, consulting and trade negotiations (representing my country). And one of our advisors, is a sociologists working on whole video servers and social networks (but not Plone)… so funny to see there are “more of us”.

Great to hear from you!
Nate Aune, and the other P4A contributors are really collaborative folks, and are not afraid to reinvent or improve what they’re doing — I’m sure they would be thrilled to have more folks in the kitchen with them!
Jon !
Thanks so much. Would you be so kind to email me one/several of their emails ? We already have a nice photo upload module + slideshow ready (testing it and I am not sure to which extend it’s stand alone or not). People upload with a batch upload (jupload, the commercial version) a bunch of photos, and then an xml feed is created and slideshow is ready. Also d&d to organize order. Grandmother can do it - level.
My email is given in the email field.
Thanks for the quick response !
Patrick

I have two more questions…
– do you know if one can implement a collaborative filter (Slope One) written in C++. I am totally not versed in this.. I know Plone is partly written in C++ so.. it should be possible ?
– Blogs. I guess the architecture of Wordpress doesn’t allow for Plone implementation nor does Lyceum… but does Plone have any decent looking (and yes we DO live in 2008, not 1978 which seems to be Plone’s problem all too often) blog ? Would there be interest from others to co-create a really good one ?
Patrick-
These are good questions to ask on the plone-users list, where there are hundreds of knowledgeable folks.
Short answers: Plone has zero lines of C++; it’s 100% python. Not sure what that means for your collaborative filter idea.
I don’t understand your blogging question, but there are several simple blogging products for Plone. None are as elaborate as a specialized blogging platform like Wordpress. There is a lot of energy in this area these days; more is always welcome. The project that has the most momentum is “Quills.”
